What an ancient, intriguing story inside this epic song!! John Barleycorn (Must Die) is a ballad found in the first decade of the twentieth century in Cecil Sharpe's collection, but it boasts very ancient origins, with an estimated one hundred and forty versions from the sixteenth century onwards, conceived in Oxfordshire, Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and Somerset. The most accredited interpretations of this ancient song are linked to the metaphor of the reaping of barley corn, with the subsequent production of beer and whisky, and to the attempt - unsuccessful, in fact, in the end it could be defined as a 'drinking song' - to give up alcohol addiction, here personified in John Barleycorn, nomen omen, who 'must die', but there are many variants, which add that quid of mystery. We like to share our experiences with music here at 420. A staffer here attended a concert in 1976 (he's the old guy here) 😆 The band was Bad Co and the venue was the Civic Center in Houston Texas. After a stellar performance by Paul Roger's, Simon Kirke,Mick Ralph's and Boz Burrell the end of the show was near but after a few minutes of lighters in the air and 10k fans stomping the floor the stage lights went down for one last encore. When the lighting began to illuminate the stage a grand piano had been placed center stage and Paul began the piano intro to the song Bad Co. Needless to say the house erupted into pure excitement and nothing more was necessary from the band. They brought the house down that night.

Black Sabbath with the addition of Dio on vocals brought us new powerful music from the Godfathers of metal. In a chance meeting at the Rainbow club Toni Iommi and Ronny James Dio discussed forming a group. Toni invited Ronnie over for a get to know weekend jam and presented Dio with something he had been working on. A song titled Children Of The Sea. It was during this weekend jam that a bond was created between Ronnie and Toni that would become Black Sabbath.
